Euro Banknotes (Money of the European Union)

Euro Banknotes (Money of the European Union) The euro (EUR or ) banknote series comprises seven different values: €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200 and €500. The euro was formally established as a unit of exchange on 1 January 1999. On January 1st, 2002, twelve of the fifteen European Union members completed their conversion to using the Euro instead of their own national currencies. These can be used anywhere within the euro area, regardless of country of issue.

The designs are symbolic for Europe’s architectural heritage. They do not represent any existing monuments. Windows and gateways dominate the front side of each banknote as symbols of the spirit of openness and cooperation in the EU. The reverse side of each banknote features a bridge from a particular age, symbolise communication between the people of Europe and between Europe and the rest of the world.

The euro banknote designs were chosen from 44 proposals in a design competition, launched by the Council of the European Monetary Institute (EMI) on 12 February 1996. The euro banknotes were designed by Mr. Robert Kalina of the Austrian central bank (Oesterreichische Nationalbank). He won the Europe-wide design competition, was selected on December 1996.

The euro banknote paper consists of 100% pure cotton fibre, which feels crisp and durability (not limp or waxy).
The design of euro banknotes include several characteristics and security features: additional tactile marks for the visually impaired; the seven banknote has a different size; water marks on both sides of the note and a security thread; raised printing (some characters are raised to the touch); Infra-red and ultra-violet watermarks; bar code; holographic panels showing note denomination and the euro-symbol (€) for all notes plus an additional architectural holographic image.
